Why does a judge use latin?

in court, when a judge and barrister talk to each other, sometimes they use Latin words. for my school ignment i have to write why they use those latin words if latin is a dead language. what are the origins of latin and why are they still used? i need answers as quick as possible because its due in soon! thanks so much guys!
